new student orientation

new student orientation is a week-long series of programs to welcome new students and ease their transition into the juilliard community. during this time, you will get to know your fellow classmates, attend division-specific meetings, register for classes, and learn about the programs, resources, and services that will help you thrive during your time at juilliard.

what you need to know

important dates

all new-to-juilliard students are required to attend new student orientation. this year orientation will be conducted online. (for students who have recently graduated from juilliard, please see the information for specific student populations below.) listed below are important dates for new students. please check back here regularly for updates and changes.

  • deadline to complete international essentials and juilliard online new student orientation programs - thursday, august 20, 2020
  • online international student orientation - friday, august 21, 2020
  • online new student orientation - monday, august 24 - thursday, august 27, 2020
  • an in-person orientation is currently scheduled for monday, october 26 - wednesday, october 28, 2020 (subject to change pending health guidance)

communications

students will receive several emails over the course of the summer with important information from various departments at juilliard. by now, all new students have received a juilliard email address. please check this email regularly as communications regarding orientation and fall activities will be sent to your juilliard email. 

additionally, new students will begin receiving our bi-weekly student e-blast. our e-blast contains weekly online events and community announcements. new students are welcome to join our online programs. also, be sure to follow us on facebook and instagram too!

disability-related accommodations

the juilliard school will make reasonable disability accommodations for students, guests, and community members with disabilities. if you need to request a disability accommodation, please contact the office of academic support and disability services (oasds) as soon as possible (but ideally no later than 4-5 weeks before the start of orientation) to ensure timely accommodation. please contact oasds, at o[email protected] or (212) 799-5000, extension 320.

students in need of a disability housing accommodation should have followed the instructions in the housing application, which was due by may 15, 2020.

health record form

Complete Your Health & Immunization Record Information

the health record form is due to health services by august 1. you will need a medical provider to complete part of the form. if you have any questions about the form or are having difficulty locating your immunization records or obtaining a required vaccine please contact health services at [email protected] or call (212) 799-5000 extension 282.

housing

on-campus

students who have applied for housing in the meredith willson residence hall will receive communications directly from the office of residence life regarding housing assignments. please note the priority deadline to submit applications was may 15, 2020. if you have questions about the housing application process, please email residence life at [email protected].
 

off-campus

students who are not required to live on campus and are looking for off-campus housing resources can request access our private facebook group, the juilliard off-campus housing forum, where apartment listings, sublets, and roommate requests are posted. individuals who have recently been accepted to juilliard will have membership approved upon confirmation of enrollment.

late arrival request process

new students are expected to participate in new student orientation. however, if you have a professional commitment or medical situation that would prevent you from participating in orientation on time, you may request an approval for a late arrival by emailing [email protected] no later than august 1, 2020. please be advised that late arrival requests are not guaranteed to be approved. 

online pre-orientation courses

all new students will be sent an online pre-orientation course through canvas, our learning management system. this course, called the juilliard online new student orientation (jonso) provides a wide range of information about the school, as well as specific information for each student's program of study and required placement assessments. 

international students will also be required to complete the international essentials course, which explains key immigration regulations. 

both international essentials and jonso must be completed by thursday, august 20, 2020.

information for specific student populations

international students

new international students are required to attend a specialized online orientation on friday, august 21, 2020 with specific sessions about international student regulations and cultural adjustment. international students will receive specific information from the office of international advisement (oia) regarding the i-20 request process and the online international essentials course on canvas.

returning for master of music (mm) or graduate diploma (gd)

current undergraduate juilliard students who are returning for an mm or gd degree program are not required to attend new student orientation or submit a new health record form.

artist diploma including resident quartets (ad)/doctorate of musical arts (dma)

all dma students will receive information over the summer regarding required meetings and activities that will take place on thursday, august 27.

current juilliard students who are returning for an ad or dma are not required to attend orientation or submit a new health record form. however, you may have specific departmental requirements on thursday, august 27.

new ad and dma students will be required to attend an orientation on thursday, august 27, 2020.

in addition, all artist diploma in opera studies (ados) students are required to attend the vocal arts orientation session on thursday, august 27. other dates and times may be announced by vocal arts.

barnard-columbia-juilliard (bcj) exchange

barnard or columbia students enrolled in the bcj exchange program are not required to attend the juilliard new student orientation. you will receive information from barnard or columbia university regarding a required online meeting with juilliard, to be held in late august.

what are placement assessments and will i need to take them?

placement assessments are evaluation tools that are intended to reveal your knowledge and skill level so that you will be placed in the proper classes. students have received specific information about required placement assessments. this year, all placement assessments will be completed online before the start of classes.

when do i register for classes?

new students will register for classes after the completion of placement assessments.
